ABOUT BHUTAN

Bhutan, a Buddhist kingdom on the Himalayas eastern edge, is known for its monasteries, fortresses (dzongs) and dramatic Landscapes that ranges from subtropical plains to steep mountains and valleys. In   high Himalayas, peaks, such as 7,326m Jomolhari are popular trekking destinations.

Bhutan is the first country in the world with specific constitutional obligations on its people to protect and preserve the environment.

Bhutan is a constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary form of government. Bhutan is known as “The Last Shangrila”, the kingdom of Bhutan has a strong sense of culture and tradition that binds its people and clearly distinguishes in the world as one of the last remaining Buddhist kingdom in the world.

1. Tiger Nest (Paro Taktsang)

Paro Taktsang is also known as the (Tiger’s Nest) is a sacred Vajrayyana Himalayan Buddhist site located in the Cliffside of the upper Paro valley in Bhutan.

2. Thimphu.(Capital of Bhutan)

Thimphu, Bhutan’s capital, occupies a valley in the country’s interior .In addition to being a government seat, the city is known as for its Buddhist sites. The massive Tashichho Dzong is a fortified monastery and government palace with gold –roofs.

3. Punakha Dzong

The Punakha Dzong (the palace of great happiness), is the administrative Centre of Punakha District. The Dzong is located at the confluence of the Pho chhu(father)and Mo chhu(mother)rivers in the Punakha –Wangdue valley.

4. Chhimi Lhakhang

Chhimi lhakhang is the repository of the original wooden phallus symbol brought by Drukpa Kunley. The giant wooden phallus is used to bless the people who visit the monastery, especially women who are looking to conceive.

5. Dochu La

Dochu La is a mountain pass in the snow covered Himalayas within Bhutan on the road from Thimphu to Punakha where 108 memorial chortens or stupas known as “Druk Wangyal Chortens” have been built by Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuk, the eldest Queen Mother.

6. Trongsa Dzong

Trongsa, previously Trongsa, is a Thromde or town, and the capital of Trongsa District in central Bhutan. The name means “new village” in Dzongkha. The first temple was built in 1543 by the Drukpa lama Ngagi Wangchuk, who was the great-grandfather of Ngawang Namgyal, Zhabdrung Rinpoche, the unifier of Bhutan.

7. Bumthang Dzong( Jaker Dzong )

Jakar Dzong or Jakar Yugyal Dzong is the Dzong or fortress of the Bumthang District in central Bhutan. It is located on a ridge above Jakar town in the Chamkhar valley of Bumthang. It is built on the site of an earlier temple established by the Ralung hierarch Yongzin Ngagi Wangchuk (1517–1554) when he came to Bhutan.
